Photographing New York City From Morning to Night

This workshop is built around how photographers actually work in a city like New York — returning to strong locations at different times of day, adapting to changing light, and learning how to read a scene rather than rushing from place to place. Over several days, we photograph New York City from early morning through blue hour, focusing on composition, timing, and decision-making in real-world conditions, with expert guidance throughout and time to refine your images along the way.

Mastering Cityscape Photography in New York

New York City offers an extraordinary range of architectural lines, open spaces, bridges, and skyline views — but photographing the city well requires patience, timing, and dynamic positioning. This workshop is built around photographing New York City when the light is right and the atmosphere supports strong compositions.
Over several days, we photograph the city during early mornings, golden hour, and blue hour, focusing on framing, balance, perspective, and how light interacts with the built environment. The pace is unhurried, allowing time to observe, refine compositions, and make thoughtful decisions rather than rushing from one location to the next.

Day 2: October 24 – Central Park at Sunrise & Lower Manhattan

  • Early Morning: Central Park
We begin the day with a sunrise session in Central Park, exploring some of the park's most photogenic areas. Early light, quiet paths, and autumn colors allow us to focus on composition, depth, and storytelling in a quieter side of New York City.

What You Will Learn

Jan-Tore Oevrevik teaching photography during a golden-hour field session
This New York workshop is a hands-on learning experience focused on real-world city photography. The city moves fast, the light changes quickly, and conditions are constantly changing, making it an ideal place to strengthen practical photographic skills that translate far beyond this workshop.
  • Using ND and polarizing filters to control reflections, water movement, and contrast
  • Working with long exposures, including Bulb mode, to control water, cloud movement, and busy urban environments
  • Exposure stacking techniques for difficult and high-contrast light
  • Balancing aperture, shutter speed, and ISO for different lighting conditions
  • Choosing focus points for sharp results from front to back

During the Workshop

Instruction is adapted to your experience level, and questions are always welcome. We'll work directly in the field, adjusting camera settings, refining compositions, and solving challenges as they arise — whether that's reflections, crowds, or changing light.
When time allows, I'm also happy to help with editing questions, including Lightroom Classic workflows such as importing, organizing, and exporting images for those who would like extra confidence managing their files while traveling.

After the Workshop

After the workshop, each photographer is offered a private, one-on-one editing session lasting up to three hours. This session is fully dedicated to you and your images, with time to review a selection of photographs in detail.
We’ll discuss composition, light, focus, and creative direction, and I’ll walk you through my own editing approach using Adobe Lightroom Classic and Photoshop. This is also an open space to ask personal photography questions and refine your individual workflow.

What Participants Say

These reviews are from participants across workshops led by Jan-Tore Oevrevik.
Portrait of a photography workshop participant at Cadini di Misurina in the Dolomites
★★★★★
JT thinks of and takes care of all the important details! I am a fairly decent photographer but to research all these locations and decide which are best for sunrise or sunset and where is the exact best spot to photograph from is an enormous undertaking when you are not thoroughly familiar with the area. Jan-Tore has done his research! He has the character and attention to detail needed to offer a first class workshop from lodgings and meals, to best photo locations.
As a photographer, JT has a great depth of experience. He listens to your vision and then shares his knowledge on composition and camera settings to help you get the most out of a location and bring that vision to life in post processing.
One more thing - the luxury, the camaraderie, the simplicity of a small group cannot be overstated!

★★★★★
These workshops were by far the best I've ever experienced. The attention to detail, small group, and perfect locations were exceptional! With it being all inclusive, I was free to concentrate on my photography - with excellent guidance from the instructors - and enjoy the amazing locations. 10 out of 10 would recommend.

★★★★★
As a "Plus 1" on their recent Dolomites workshop adventure, I didn't know what to expect. I was blown away by the venues; the sunrise/sunset locations and vistas; the hotels and group camaraderie; the daytime traveling and great meals; as well as the careful planning by the JTO Photography Team. The daily adventures were personally rewarding for someone with just a cell phone and loads of confidence in the leaders. There was a lot packed into 8 full days of my experiences. The memories resurface whenever I look at my Italy - Dolomites files. If ever a workshop deserves an A+ grade, this is the one! (And I'm not even the photographer in the family!)

Our workshop is open to photographers of all skill levels, from beginners to advanced. Whether you're just starting out or looking to refine your craft, we tailor our instruction to meet your individual needs.

We aim to minimize unnecessary walking by using Uber and taxi transportation whenever practical. That said, some walking is unavoidable when exploring photography locations in the city.

Most walks are short and spread out over the day, with the longest continuous walk being the crossing of the Brooklyn Bridge. Participants should be comfortable walking on city sidewalks, navigating steps and bridges, standing during photography sessions, and carrying a photography backpack.

This workshop is open to people of all ages, commonly ranging from their 30s to 80s. If you have specific mobility concerns, please feel free to reach out in advance so we can discuss them.

This workshop is open to photographers of all levels, and guidance is provided throughout the experience. To make the workshop smoother and more enjoyable, we recommend spending a little time beforehand becoming familiar with your camera’s basic settings.

It’s helpful to know how to:

Adjust aperture (f-stop), shutter speed, ISO, and focus settings

Enable exposure bracketing (if your camera supports it)

Use the self-timer and bulb mode for long exposures

Don’t worry—we’ll explain the best settings to use while shooting, but being familiar with these basics will allow us to focus more on improving your creative and technical skills during the workshop.

Gear & Preparation

Recommended equipment:

  • DSLR or mirrorless camera
  • A 24–105mm or 24–200mm lens can cover most scenes and is a practical choice if you prefer to carry less gear
  • Additional lenses such as a wide-angle (e.g., 16–35mm) or telephoto (e.g., 70–200mm) can offer more flexibility depending on your shooting style
  • Sturdy tripod
  • Extra batteries and memory cards
  • Lens cleaning cloth or blower
  • Umbrella or rain cover for your camera
  • Comfortable backpack for carrying gear
  • Laptop for backups and editing (optional)

Recommended filters:

  • A neutral density (ND) filter is highly recommended, especially a strong ND filter such as an ND 10 (ND 1000). This allows for longer exposures in daylight, smoothing water and movement in scenes such as the East River and Central Park.
  • A polarizing filter can help control reflections and enhance fall colors, and is worth bringing if you have one.

Also bring:

  • Battery charger, card reader, and cables
  • Travel adapter for USA (Type A)

If you are unsure about your setup, feel free to reach out before the workshop.

New York in late October typically brings cool mornings, mild afternoons, and cooler evenings. Temperatures often range from the mid-40s to mid-60s °F (7–18°C), with changing conditions throughout the day. We recommend packing:

  • Comfortable walking shoes suitable for city sidewalks and bridges
  • Layered clothing (such as a light jacket, sweater, or insulated vest) to adjust easily between shooting sessions
  • A wind- and rain-resistant jacket or umbrella for outdoor photography
  • Dressing in layers will help you stay comfortable throughout the day while allowing you to focus fully on photography rather than the weather.
  • Casual clothing for dinners (no formal wear required)

Yes. Please bring any prescription medications you may need during the workshop. It is also recommended to bring a few basic items:

  • Pain relief or headache medication
  • Allergy medication
  • Cold remedies or throat lozenges

If you are traveling across time zones, a mild sleep aid can be helpful.
