Photographing San Francisco From Morning to Night

This workshop is built around how photographers actually work in a city like San Francisco — returning to strong locations at different times of day, adapting to changing light, and learning how to read a scene rather than rushing from place to place. Over five shooting days, we photograph San Francisco from Golden Gate sunrise viewpoints to skyline scenes at sunset and blue hour, focusing on composition, timing, and decision-making in real-world conditions, with time to slow down, refine your approach, and leave with a stronger set of images.

Building Strong Images in San Francisco

San Francisco offers dramatic elevation changes, layered city views, open waterfronts, and some of the most recognizable bridges in the world. Photographing the city well requires understanding vantage points, working with changing fog, managing contrast between bright skies and darker foregrounds, and adapting to changing conditions.
Throughout the workshop, we photograph a variety of locations, from the Golden Gate Bridge at sunrise to the Palace of Fine Arts at blue hour and the Bay Bridge from the waterfront. The focus is on composition, exposure, and learning how to make the most of each location. The pace allows time to adjust camera settings, refine compositions, and ask questions along the way.

Daily Schedule Overview

San Francisco offers different photographic opportunities throughout the day. Sunrise sessions focus on the Golden Gate Bridge and city views before the busiest hours. Afternoon and evening shoots are planned for the best light and blue hour around the bridges, waterfront, and skyline. The schedule allows plenty of time to work each location without feeling rushed.

What You Will Learn

Jan-Tore Oevrevik teaching photography during a golden-hour field session
San Francisco presents real photographic challenges—steep streets, changing fog, strong contrast between sky and foreground, wind along the waterfront, and constantly changing light around the bridges. This workshop is built around learning how to photograph in those conditions rather than waiting for perfect ones.
  • Using ND and polarizing filters effectively along the waterfront and around reflective surfaces
  • Managing long exposures near water and in windy conditions
  • Controlling exposure in high-contrast scenes, especially when photographing bridges against bright skies
  • Building strong compositions on steep streets and elevated viewpoints
  • Working confidently in low light during blue hour and early morning

During the Workshop

Instruction is adapted to your experience level, and questions are always welcome. We work side by side in the field, adjusting exposure, refining composition, checking focus, and reviewing results on the back of the camera while the light is still changing.
Whether we're dealing with fog around the Golden Gate Bridge, bright skies over the bay, or busy city streets, we work through those challenges together.
When time allows, I'm also happy to help with Lightroom Classic questions, from organizing files while traveling to preparing images for print or the web.

After the Workshop

After the workshop, each photographer is offered a private one-on-one editing session lasting up to three hours.
We review a selection of your images together, looking at composition, light, exposure, and editing techniques. I'll walk you through my Lightroom Classic and Photoshop workflow, and we'll refine your images step by step.
This session is focused entirely on you and your images, with plenty of time to ask questions and refine your editing workflow.

What Participants Say

These reviews are from participants across workshops led by Jan-Tore Oevrevik.
Portrait of a photography workshop participant at Cadini di Misurina in the Dolomites
★★★★★
JT thinks of and takes care of all the important details! I am a fairly decent photographer but to research all these locations and decide which are best for sunrise or sunset and where is the exact best spot to photograph from is an enormous undertaking when you are not thoroughly familiar with the area. Jan-Tore has done his research! He has the character and attention to detail needed to offer a first class workshop from lodgings and meals, to best photo locations.
As a photographer, JT has a great depth of experience. He listens to your vision and then shares his knowledge on composition and camera settings to help you get the most out of a location and bring that vision to life in post processing.
One more thing - the luxury, the camaraderie, the simplicity of a small group cannot be overstated!

★★★★★
The JTO Photography workshop (my fifth in 3 years) was way above my expectations. From fantastic shooting locations to professional teachings, accurate and personal, we were welcomed into a group of like-minded photographers that made the whole experience something to remember. This is a tribute to the mindset of the organizers who carefully selected accommodations that were well located and positively charming. This workshop was a highlight in my photography journey, and I am ready for more!

★★★★★
As a "Plus 1" on their recent Dolomites workshop adventure, I didn't know what to expect. I was blown away by the venues; the sunrise/sunset locations and vistas; the hotels and group camaraderie; the daytime traveling and great meals; as well as the careful planning by the JTO Photography Team. The daily adventures were personally rewarding for someone with just a cell phone and loads of confidence in the leaders. There was a lot packed into 8 full days of my experiences. The memories resurface whenever I look at my Italy - Dolomites files. If ever a workshop deserves an A+ grade, this is the one! (And I'm not even the photographer in the family!)

During the San Francisco workshop, editing questions can be addressed informally during free time when practical, including Lightroom Classic workflows such as importing, organizing, and exporting images.

After the workshop, each photographer is offered a private one-on-one editing session lasting up to three hours. This session is fully focused on your images and questions, covering topics such as composition, light, focus, and creative direction. I’ll also walk through my own editing approach using Adobe Lightroom Classic and Photoshop.

Our workshop is open to photographers of all skill levels, from beginners to advanced. Whether you're just starting out or looking to refine your craft, we tailor our instruction to meet your individual needs.

We minimize unnecessary walking by using Uber and taxi transportation whenever practical. That said, some walking is unavoidable when working at photography locations in San Francisco.

Participants should be comfortable walking on city sidewalks, navigating hills and occasional uneven surfaces, standing for periods during shooting sessions, and carrying a photography backpack.

Walks are generally short and spread throughout the day, with time built in for rest between sessions.

This workshop is open to people of many age groups and experience levels. If you have specific mobility concerns, please feel free to reach out in advance so we can discuss them.

This workshop is open to photographers of all levels, and guidance is provided throughout the experience. To make the workshop smoother and more enjoyable, we recommend spending a little time beforehand becoming familiar with your camera’s basic settings.

It’s helpful to know how to:

Adjust aperture (f-stop), shutter speed, ISO, and focus settings

Enable exposure bracketing (if your camera supports it)

Use the self-timer and bulb mode for long exposures

Don’t worry—we’ll explain the best settings to use while shooting, but being familiar with these basics will allow us to focus more on improving your creative and technical skills during the workshop.

Gear & Preparation

Recommended equipment:

  • DSLR or mirrorless camera
  • A 24–105mm or 24–200mm lens can cover most scenes and is a practical choice if you prefer to carry less gear
  • Additional lenses such as a wide-angle (e.g., 16–35mm) or telephoto (e.g., 70–200mm) can offer more flexibility depending on your shooting style
  • Sturdy tripod
  • Extra batteries and memory cards
  • Lens cleaning cloth or blower
  • Umbrella or rain cover for your camera
  • Comfortable backpack for carrying gear
  • Laptop for backups and editing (optional)

Recommended filters:

  • A neutral density (ND) filter is highly recommended, especially a strong ND filter such as an ND 10 (ND 1000). This allows for longer exposures in daylight, smoothing water and movement in scenes such as the East River and Central Park.
  • A polarizing filter can help control reflections and deepen contrast, and is worth bringing if you have one.

Also bring:

  • Battery charger, card reader, and cables
  • Travel adapter for USA (Type A)

If you are unsure about your setup, feel free to reach out before the workshop.

NSan Francisco in early November often brings cool mornings and evenings, mild daytime temperatures, and occasional wind, especially near the waterfront. Conditions can change quickly, so layering is key. We recommend packing:

  • Comfortable walking shoes suitable for city sidewalks and uneven surfaces
  • Layered clothing (such as a light jacket, sweater, fleece, or insulated vest)
  • A wind- and rain-resistant jacket or shell
  • Dressing in layers will help you stay comfortable throughout the day while allowing you to focus fully on photography rather than the weather.
  • Casual clothing for dinners (no formal wear required)

Yes. Please bring any prescription medications you may need during the workshop. It is also recommended to bring a few basic items:

  • Pain relief or headache medication
  • Allergy medication
  • Cold remedies or throat lozenges

If you are traveling across time zones, a mild sleep aid can be helpful.
